In my first product design course, taught by Cornell AppDev, I designed a TikTok feature that allows users to customize and organize sounds for a more streamlined TikTok creation experience!

Context

With over 1 billion active users per month, TikTok is this generation’s leading short-form video-sharing social media platform. With an ever-evolving cycle of trends and a seemingly infinite amount of videos to engage with, users (like myself) can practically spend hours scrolling through their For You Page.

But sometimes, I watch so many that I can almost never keep track of what I’ve seen. In the vast amount of TikToks your typical user watches a day, the chances of them finding a video they previously watched are almost zero:

With this people problem in mind, I went into user research guided by how to better bring joy to users. However, my mind changed after talking to some TikTok users…


User Research

My goal was to identify key pain points in the process of discovering, watching, and sharing Tiktoks. After conducting 4 interviews, I discovered 3 key insights:

<aside> 🔑 Users want to share TikToks with friends, but they have trouble finding them again

“When I’m talking to someone, sometimes I like to reference or show them TikToks that remind me of them”

<aside> 🔑 Users don’t often rewatch TikToks because of the high volume and variety of content

“Out of sight, out of mind. There’s just so much other content to consume, it’s almost a lost cause trying to find it again.

<aside> 🔑 Users want to keep up with trends but struggle to find the original TikTok because of arbitrary sound names

“I usually search up really specific descriptions of the trend or type up the lyrics of the trending sound to find the TikTok I’m trying to replicate.”
